Abstract Dr. Robert S. Dow established the first EEG laboratory in the Pacific Northwest and the first neurology practice in Oregon. He served as the Head of the Department of Neurology at Good Samaritan Hospital where he developed a treatment for epilepsy through electrical stimulation to the cerebellum. Abstract

The genesis of neurological sciences research in the Pacific Northwest is detailed in this collection. Dr. Robert Stone Dow (1908-95) was locally educated at Linfield College (BA 1929), and University of Oregon Medical School (M.A., M.D., 1934; Ph.D., 1935). Mentored by Dr. Olaf Larsell he began his life's work in Neurology which resulted in the creation of the Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI).

Abstract The Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI) was founded by Robert S. Dow, M.D., Ph.D., the first board certified neurologist in Oregon in 1959, and formally established in 1975.
