Dr. David Mahler (Feb. 3, 1923-Aug.2, 2017) was instrumental in the development of the Material Sciences Department, and his career is a vital part of OSHU history. He was a dental biomaterials scientist who was internationally recognized as the preeminent expert in dental amalgam. In 1975, Mahler created the formula for a new silver amalgam filling that became the standard of dentistry until the end of the 20th century.
