Historical Note

Organized in 1921 by Emma Jones, the first alumnae association was located at the Multnomah Training School for Nurses. By 1940, the Association consisted of 200 members, primarily volunteers. After temporarily disbanded during the years 1971-1976, due to lack of movement, funding issues, and support from the School, the alumni association came to life again in 1976 with the help of former Dean Carol A. Lindeman, former association president Joyce Calling (‘61), and former president Jean Bates (‘65) (“A History of the School” Gaines, Barbara, PhD, 2002). Currently, the School of Nursing Alumni Association consists of 10,000 individuals including graduates from The Oregon Health Sciences, University School of Nursing, which includes the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center of Nursing, the University of Oregon School of Nursing, the University of Oregon Medical School Department of Nursing, and Multnomah Training School. The Associations’ objectives include acting as an information exchange, providing social and educational opportunities, promoting professional and social relations, and acting as a strategic support for baccalaureate and graduate education of S.O.N. (“School of Nursing Alumni Association By-Laws”).
