 Collection
Identifier: 2014-022

Scope and Contents

The collection contains statistical and promotional health related materials from the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS), spanning from 1993 to 2011. Box 1 contains eight books of annual reports for vital statistics from the DHS (then titled, Department of Human Resources) Health Division from 1993 to 1996, and an "Oregon Youth Risk Behavior Survey Summary Report" from 1995. Each year (with the exception of 1993) contains two volumes of vital statistics - "Mortality: Fetal and Infant Mortality" and "Natality: Induced Terminations of Pregnancy and Teen Pregnancy". Box 2 contains twenty-two folders, each holding a promotional booklet for a concentration of DHS health services: teen pregnancy prevention and sexual health, child and family health, healthcare in schools, and perinatal data. The dates of these materials range from 1994 to 2011, although the bulk of Box 2 dates between 2000 and 2010. Two folders in Box 2 - one for an early childhood care pamphlet from the Oregon Commission on Children and Families, and the other for an informational packet on "A Safe Place for Newborns" from DHS - are not dated.

Historical Note

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) is the primary state agency that provides assistance and advocacy to Oregon residents and communities. Created in 1971, DHS was initially called the Department of Human Resources and covered a spectrum of areas, such as employment, housing, corrections, youth and health services. Over the years, many areas have branched off into their own departments. In 2001, the Oregon Department of Human Resources was re-named as the Oregon Department of Human Services. Currently, DHS primarily serves children, families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. In 2009, DHS transferred many of their health services over to the recently established Oregon Health Authority. The Oregon Department of Human Services Published Materials (Ken Rosenberg Collection) consists primarily of public health related publications.
