Historical Note
The Nurse-Midwifery Practice at the Oregon Health Sciences University (now OHSU) School of Nursing was established in the early 1980s to function as the main clinical site for the newly created midwifery and women’s healthcare nurse practitioner education program. This practice sprung from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology but was moved to the School of Nursing when the program began to accept midwifery students. The program enables students to earn a certification in nurse midwifery after 2 years of coursework and clinical practice while receiving a master’s degree in nursing. Faculty heading the program in its early years included Linda Wheeler, Carol Howe, and Polly Malby. As of 2018, the practice is still active and routinely ranks among the best programs in the nation for nurse-midwifery.
