Scope and Contents
The Reid "Sam" Connell papers houses the personal papers of Dr. Reid S. Connell. This collection, which dates from 1943 to 2005, consists of research, curricula vitae, correspondence, photographs, microslides, sketches, paintings, bones, glass plates, copper plates, syllabi, textbooks, departmental overviews, and minutes, evidencing his studies, research, and teaching career at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
This collection will be of interest to those following the work of Dr. Connell at OHSU. It also provides insight into his relationships and work with other doctors including Drs. Robert Lewis Bacon, Anthony Pearson, Archie R. Tunturi, William A. Stotler, and James W. Papez. Also included in this collection are sketch and painting notebooks of Dr. Tunturi.

Biographical Note
Born in Hillsboro, Oregon in 1937, Dr. Reid "Sam" Connell graduated from Oregon State University (OSU) with a master’s degree in anatomy. Shortly afterwards he attended the University of Oregon Medical School, graduating with a doctorate and was appointed to the faculty as an instructor in both anatomy and neurology. Connell remained teaching at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) until 1994 where, after retirement, he oversaw the administration of the allied health programs there.

Abstract
Dr. Reid "Sam" Connell is a graduate of Oregon State University and the University of Oregon Medical School, with a master’s in anatomy and a doctorate in medicine. As an instructor at OHSU, he taught anatomy, embryology, histology, and neurology as well as overseeing the allied health programs after his retirement. His research focused primarily on enabling those with broken spinal cords to regain function of limbs below the break.
