Scope and Contents Note
The Edmund E. Simpson papers contains pamphlets, broadsides, woodblock prints, and other miscellany printed by Blackwood Press during the years circa 1970-1989. This includes original wood block prints of flowers and plants by Dr. Simpson. Also included are several pages from an unknown medical text published circa 1700-1850.

Biographical Note
Dr. Edmund E. Simpson was born in San Francisco in 1912 and raised in Burlingame, California. After attending San Mateo Junior College and earning an A.B. in zoology from the University of California at Berkeley, he received an M.D. from McGill University in Montreal, where he studied internal medicine. Simpson practiced medicine in Sacramento from 1943 to 1969, then joined the staff at the University of California, Davis, Student Health Center in 1970. He retired in 1977, moving first to Pollack Pines, CA, then to Placerville, CA. At the time these papers were donated, he resided in Beaverton, OR. Simpson died October 6, 1990.
In 1956 Simpson bought a 6 x 10 handpress and began fine printing. He owned and operated the Blackwood Press in Placerville, CA, and was a member of the Book Club of California and the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco.
