Biographical Note
Dr. James Hawthorne (1819-1881) founded the Oregon Hospital for the Insane in 1862; his protégé, Dr. Simeon Edward Josephi (1849-1935) carried on his work after he died. Dr. Josephi originally came west from New York City to work as Dr. Hawthorne’s bookkeeper. After eight years on the business side of the hospital, he was inspired to also become a physician. He went on to become a prominent doctor, a two-term state senator, and the first dean of the University of Oregon Medical School (predecessor to OHSU).
