Dr. E. Murray Burns graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health & Science University) in 1931. He went on to complete residencies in neuropsychiatry at Wisconsin General Hospital and in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1941, he joined the 46th General Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Arthur J. McLean was the first trained neurosurgeon in Portland, OR. Alternately described as hot-headed, brash, brilliant, and busy, McLean was known for a tireless devotion to his profession and for being open about his bitternesses and prejudices.
