Abstract

The genesis of neurological sciences research in the Pacific Northwest is detailed in this collection. Dr. Robert Stone Dow (1908-95) was locally educated at Linfield College (BA 1929), and University of Oregon Medical School (M.A., M.D., 1934; Ph.D., 1935). Mentored by Dr. Olaf Larsell he began his life's work in Neurology which resulted in the creation of the Neurological Sciences Institute (NSI).

Abstract Dietitians were one of the earliest health professions trained at the University of Oregon Medical School located on Marquam Hill in Portland, Oregon. The student dietitian training program began in 1930-31. Under the auspices of the Oregon Dietetic Association, the program was sponsored by Portland area hospitals, including Multnomah County Hospital and Doernbecher Memorial Hospital for Children. Roy Laver Swank papers

Abstract

Roy Laver Swank, M.D., Ph.D. was a prominent neurologist noted for his long research into the subject of Multiple Sclerosis, and for founding the Swank Multiple Sclerosis Clinic in Beaverton in 1991. In addition, Swank was the head of the Neurology department at the University of Oregon Medical School from 1954 to 1976. His papers contain a wide variety of materials and artifacts, including photocopied manuscripts and publications from 1931-2003.

Louis G. Terkla, D.M.D., (March 24, 1925 - September 11, 2022) graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School in 1952. He soon joined the faculty there and eventually became Dean of the Dental School serving from 1967 to 1984. This collection encompasses a diverse range of materials primarily related to Terkla’s professional activities and contributions to the field of dentistry.
