Abstract The origins of the OHSU School of Nursing can be traced to the summer of 1919 when the University of Oregon introduced the state’s first professional courses in nursing. The courses were offered in Portland in cooperation with the Northwest Division of the American Red Cross Home Service Department, the Portland Visiting Nurse Association, the Welfare Bureau, and the Oregon Tuberculosis Association. Abstract

Ruth Avery Wiens was an experienced psychiatric mental health nurse who worked at St Vincent Hospital and Medical Center as its Nursing Director; at the Veterans Administration Hospital; and at the UO School of Nursing as Dean Pro-Tem during the transition in SON leadership between Jean Boyle (1957-75) and Carol Lindeman (1976-95). Many of her papers have been donated which show the inter-relationships of nursing and nursing education.
