Doctoral hoods collection
Scope and Contents
The Doctoral hoods collection contains three doctoral hoods and two long bags. The first hood with gold velvet trim (Medicine) is from a Doctor of Science graduate at the University of Michigan; the second hood with purple velvet trim (Law) is from a Legum Doctor graduate at New York University; and the third hood is from a Doctor of Science graduate at the University of Oregon. The two long fabric bags are made of black corduroy and green velvet. The origin of these bags is unknown, but it appears that they could have been a part of the graduation regalia. Although the collection is dated circa 1980 by a previous archivist, the exact dates and provenance of the hoods cannot be determined.

Historical Note
The doctoral hood has been worn by scholars during graduation ceremonies since the 14th century. Hoods are long, typically worn hanging down the back, and are composed of black fabric to match the gown. What distinguishes each doctoral hood is the color of the velvet trim, which runs 5 inches wide along the edge of the hood. Each color corresponds to a different degree earned.
