Scope and Contents

The Thomas M. Joyce papers documents a notebook compiled by Dr. Joyce containing many reprints, most of which are from the proceedings of the weekly staff meetings of the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to these proceedings, there is a bulletin from the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan and three medical articles. The weekly staff meeting papers date from 1926-1929. The articles and bulletin included date from 1926-1941. Only one reprint attributes Dr. Thomas M. Joyce as author.

Biographical Note

Dr. Thomas M. Joyce was born in Iowa in 1885 and received his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame. He went on to receive his M.D. and intern at the University of Michigan as a surgeon. He received a Doctor of Laws from University Portland in 1936. Dr. Joyce worked for the Mayo Clinic from 1911-1914 and practiced in Portland, OR. (1914); Dr. Joyce was Chief of Surgery, Base Hospital 46, stationed in France during World War I. He was the co-founder of the Portland Clinic in 1920 and professor of Surgery at the University of Oregon Medical School until his death in 1934.
