Historical Note
The Nurse-Midwifery Program at the OHSU School of Nursing was founded in 1976, headed by Carol Lindeman, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N. In 1981, the first class of students was admitted to the program, graduating in 1983. Faculty members guiding the program during its early formation include Linda Wheeler, Carol Howe, and Polly Malby, among many others. The program enables students to earn a certification in nurse midwifery after 2 years of course work and clinical practice and receiving a master’s degree in nursing. Through quilting parties, hand blessing ceremonies, retreats, and other gatherings, the program also fosters comradery and friendship amongst the students and faculty. The program is still alive and active today, ranked by U.S. News and World Reports in 2009 as the 1st in the nation.
