Hafner collection on Eldon and Fritzi Chuinard

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of handwritten letters, color photographs and negatives, news clippings, ephemera, and other printed material highlighting the personal and professional lives of couple Eldon "Frenchy" G. and Fritzi Chuinard and their close friendship with Helen and Paul Hafner. Materials are arranged into the following series:

I. Letters and Photographs

Consists of letters and photographs mailed from the Chuinards to the Hafners regarding get-togethers and parties hosted by the couples, attendance at meetings and events, such as the Dillihunt Hall dedication at OHSU, and other friendly commentary. Photographs are primarily of the Chuinards and Hafners together at birthday and holiday gatherings but also include several images of the Chuinards and their extended family.

II. Lewis and Clark book

Consists of news clippings and other printed materials regarding Eldon "Frenchy" Chuinard's book, "Only One Man Died: The Medical Aspects of the Lewis and Clark Expedition," first published in 1979. Included is a reprint of an article written by Dr. Chuinard entitled, "Lewis and Clark and the Bicentennial," published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1976.

III. Wedding and Funeral Memorabilia

Consists of an invitation to the Chuinard's 50th wedding anniversary celebration and a napkin from the party as well as an obituary news clipping and memorial service programs for Dr. Chuinard after his passing in 1993.

IV. Other News Clippings and Printed Material

Consists of a news clipping about Dr. Chuinard's retirement as well as his Curriculum Vitae and an obituary for Dr. Gordon L. Maurice.

Biographical and Historical Note

Eldon "Frenchy" and Fritzi Chuinard:

Eldon "Frenchy" George Chuinard, M.D., was born in Kelso, Washington on December 9, 1904. According to his obituary published in the Oregonian on February 12, 1993, Eldon worked as an orthopedic surgeon with Dr. Richard Dillehunt and Dr. Les Lucas in a private practice as well as at the Shriners Hospital in Portland as chief surgeons. He also worked for Emanuel Hospital. Dr. Chuinard is also known for his book, "Only One Man Died: The Medical Aspects of the Lewis and Clark Expedition," first published in 1979. He passed away in Lacey, Washington on February 9, 1993.

According to an obituary published in the Oregonian on August 19, 1995, Dr. Chuinard's wife, Fritzi Goff Chuinard, was born on June 9, 1906 in Ida Grove, Iowa. They married in 1930. Fritzi served as a representative in the Oregon Legislature for 6 terms. She passed away in August of 1995. The Chuinards had 2 children, Robert and Beverly.

Paul and Helen Hafner:

According to an obituary published in The Daily News, orthopedic surgeon Paul Gottlieb Hafner, M.D., was born on January 25, 1913 in Portland, Oregon. He graduated with a B.A. in chemistry from Reed College in 1934, an M.A. in biochemistry at the University of Oregon, and an M.D. from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1941. Paul was married to Frances Howard Struble until her death in 1962. He later married Helen Rose Anton, a nurse anesthetist, that worked with him at St. John Hospital. He served as director of the Crippled Children's Division of the UOMS until 1952 and also served on the Shriner's Hospital for Children Board of Directors. Dr. Hafner moved his practice to Longview, Washington in 1953. He passed away in Longview on September 15, 2011 at 98.

Acquisition Information

Materials were donated to OHSU HC&A in 2015 by the OHSU Foundation. Earlier information about provenance is unknown, although Helen and Paul Hafner are likely the original owners of the collection.
