Scope and Contents

The Walden I. Ferrier collection holds personal and academic papers of dentist Walden I Ferrier. The collection dates from 1901 to 1962 and contains military correspondence, academic manuscripts, photographs and negatives, newspaper clippings, an honorarium book and certificates of accomplishment, sketches, a graduation mortarboard, nametag, a miniature ledger book, as well as patent and manufacturing documents and correspondence. The collection displays the formative impact that Ferrier had on dentistry in the early twentieth century, and reveals some aspects of his personal ambitions and values. This collection will be helpful to anyone interested in Ferrier’s methods, personal life, education, or in the history of operative dentistry in the Pacific Northwest.

Biographical Note

Dr. Walden I. Ferrier is considered one of the great figures of modern dentistry. He was born in 1886 in Little Falls, Washington and graduated from the North Pacific College of Oregon in 1908 with a degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine. He practiced dentistry out of Seattle, and directed and instructed a wide range of Dental Study Clubs across the Pacific Northwest. Throughout the duration of his career, he published seven papers, one monograph, and contributed one chapter to a text. Ferrier advanced the cause of aesthetics in dentistry while emphasizing the importance of maintaining integrity of tooth structure. Ferrier became an expert in operative dentistry, and developed new techniques, instruments, and tools, the patents for some are included in this collection. He was respected internationally in the world of dentistry for his advancements and technique, and was made an honorary member of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, among other recognitions.

Processing Information

Appreciation plaque was removed from collection. Inscription stated: “Presented to Dr. Walden I. Ferrier by the Seattle Dental Study Club in appreciation for his 27 years of leadership and instruction as Master of Clinics November 16, 1949”
