Scope and Contents

This collection houses the personal papers of Al Torres, a preventative medicine doctor in Portland, Oregon. It contains certificates, forms, photographs of Torres, foreign language reference notes, conference and grand round notes, newsletters and school notes, as well as various artifacts for use in his office. The collection is a fascinating look into the practice of treating and caring for patients from other countries who might have difficulty interacting with a more orthodox medical system.

Biographical Note

Al Torres, a native of Costa Rica, graduated from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo before arriving in the United States. After establishing his residency at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Portland he went on to intern at Legacy Emmanuel Hospital. He later opened the Portland Industrial Travel Clinic, dedicated to serving the needs of recent immigrants to the United States as well as travelers looking for vaccinations for overseas trips.

Abstract

Al Torres, a native of Costa Rica, graduated from the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo before arriving in the United States. After serving at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Portland, and interning at Legacy Emmanuel Hospital, he went on to open the Portland Industrial Travel Clinic, dedicated to serving the needs of recent immigrants to the United States as well as travelers looking for vaccinations for overseas trips. This collection houses the personal papers of Al Torres, along with records and artifacts from the travel clinic.
