Historical note

The University of Oregon Medical School operated or was affiliated with a variety of hospitals. The Multnomah County Hospital opened its doors on Marquam Hill in 1923. The hospital provided patient care but also served as a location for instruction to students, interns, and residency training, and also housed the Department of Nursing. The Oregon State and University Tuberculosis Hospitals functioned jointly to meet the needs of an ever-increasing patient population. The Doernbecher Memorial Hospital opened on the Marquam Hill campus in 1924 to serve the children of Oregon. Patients with cancer were treated at the University Hospital, established in 1956, and research in neoplasms was conducted at the school for several decades. All of the hospitals are still in operation with the exception of the tuberculosis hospitals. However, the Multnomah County Hospital (now called the Multnomah Pavilion) is home to clinics, school departments, and surgical suites.
