This collection features photos of Steve Hamblin, a case report "Teratoma of the Upper Lip" by Dr. Charles Gurney, a personal letter between Steve’s parents, miscellaneous medical records, a letter from the University of Oregon Medical School to the Oregon Governor about funding what was then called the Crippled Children's Division (now the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center), and miscellaneous papers about surgeons Dr. Charles Gurney and Dr. Verner Lindgren.

Biographical note

On August 9, 1951, Steven Paul (Steve) Hamblin was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, with a rare congenital deformity. A large tumor was attached to his upper lip, associated with a cleft lip and cleft palate. Due to the severity of his condition, he was immediately transported to Portland for treatment at the University of Oregon Medical School, at what was then called the Crippled Children's Division (now the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center). Hamblin underwent multiple surgeries in the following weeks and subsequent years. His surgeons were Dr. Charles Gurney and his assistant, Dr. Verner Lindgren.
