Biographical Note

Richard T. Jones was born November 9, 1929 in Portland, Oregon. Earning his BS in 1953 from the University of Oregon he graduated in 1956 with an MS from the University of Oregon Medical School. He then graduated with an M.D. in 1956 from UOMS. And in 1957- 1961 he attended the California Institute of Technology to earn a Ph.D. During its many transformations as University of Oregon Medical School, University of Oregon Health Sciences University and Oregon Health Sciences University, Jones was professor in the department of Biochemistry from 1966-1996 and chairman from 1966-1993 in the School of Medicine. He was acting president of the university in 1977 and 1978. He was special consultant to the president in 1978/79 and in 1978 and in 1987 he was candidate for the presidency. He also served as assistant dean for academic affairs beginning in 1981. Richard Jones served as president of the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon and was the recipient of many research and training grants including the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon’s Discovery Award in biomedical research. His areas of expertise were: hemoglobin structure and function; abnormal hemoglobin; protein chemistry; isolation of peptides, blood coagulation; human genetics and biochemistry. He is currently a member of the Emeritus Faculty at Oregon Health & Science University in the Research Support Office.

Abstract

Richard T. Jones, current Emeritus Faculty at Oregon Health & Science University in the Research Support Office, received his M.D. from University of Oregon Medical School in 1956 and went on to earn a PhD from California Institute of Technology. Jones served as chairman of the School of Medicine and acting President in 1977 and 1978. This collection contains materials which pertain to the dedication of the Medical School Library and Auditorium and the rededication ceremony in 1984.
