Biographical Note

Henry Dennis Barker, M.D., 79, died at his home in Newport Oregon on april 14, 1996.

He was born in Junction City, Kansas on November 22, 1916. He was an Eagle Scout and later a Summerfield Scholar at Kansas University. He graduated from medical school in 1941 and served as a physician in the U.S. Army in Panama during World War II. Dr.Barker married Jean Lambert in 1945, and in 1946, they moved to Newport, where he served as family physician and surgeon until his retirement in February 1982. During his 40 years of active medical practice, Dr. Barker performed a variety of surgeries and other medical service, including the delivery of 1,664 babies.

Dr. Barker was certified by the American Board of Family Practice and was a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practitioners, He played a central role in the development of Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport.

Dr. Barker was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newport and served as an elder, sang in the choir during retirement and was on the fund raising committee for the church building fund. He was an accomplished pianist.

In May of 1995, the Barkers celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Dr. Barker was survived by his wife, Jean; four children, George, John, Paul and Sarah Barker Ball; and eight grandchildren.

Abstract

The papers of Henry D. Barker, M.D. (1916-96) provide a variety of materials which emphasize two diiferent facets of his career. A vast array of technical data is available concerning his wartime service in the Army Medical Corps in Panama. The papers relating his postwar career are primarily concerned with his paricipation in the group Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Abstract

Henry Dennis Barker (1916-1996) graduated from medical school in 1941 and served as a physician in the U.S. Army in Panama during World War II. He later worked as a family physician and surgeon in Newport, OR. This collection concerns Dr. Barker's wartime service career as well as his postwar activities.
