Scope and Contents

The original photographs in the collection were arranged in three handmade cardboard scrapbooks bound with shoelaces. They were divided by location and by date: Scrapbook [1] North Africa, 1943-1944, (17 pages, 140 photographs); Scrapbook [2] Besancon, France, 1943-1944-1945, (29 pages, 218 photographs); and Scrapbook [3] during the Mediterranean Voyage, in Southern France, during a train trip to Besancon, at Besancon, in Paris, trips to small towns, the Swiss border and the trip back home to the States, 1943-1944-1945. The photographs show the hospital facilities, staff, and activities of the hospital staff. Of special interest are the photographs of landscapes, homes, and people in daily activities in each locale. There are also photographs of German, French, Russian, and Arab soldiers, patients, and prisoners of war.

Biographical Note

Technical Sergeant Evart A. Tinker was a member of the 46th General Hospital. He worked in the GU unit caring for urology cases during World War II. Because he was male, he was a noncommissioned enlisted soldier and not an enlisted nurse. He was born 1899 March 14. He died in February of 1987.

Evart A. Tinker was a Technical Sergeant with the 46th Base Hospital in Besancon, France. His collection is comprised of photographs he took and arranged in handmade cardboard scrapbooks. Materials cover France, North Africa, and Switzerland as well as images of prisoners and soldiers.

Acquisition Information

The photographs were taken, developed, and collected by Evart A. Tinker and subsequently transferred to the OHSU Library. No further details are known at this time. The collection was accessioned and processed by the OHSU Special Collections staff in August 2000.
