Abstract

The OHSU library was founded in 1893 as part of the University of Oregon Medical Department. In 1919, the library’s 4,000 books moved up the hill to what is now Mackenzie Hall. In 1939, the library moved into a new building next door and then relocated again in 1991 with the opening of the Biomedical Information Communication Center (BICC). This collection spans the library’s history, with materials produced largely by library employees and committee members.

Wilbur Nelson Van Zile papers

Abstract

Wilbur Nelson Van Zile is known for his improvements and accomplishments in maxillofacial surgery. He served with the Navy Dental Corps during World War II, as Chief of Dental Services and Oral Surgeon at various Naval Hospitals, and as Professor and Chairman in the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Oregon Dental School. This collection consists of records in various formats that identify Wilbur Van Zile and document examples of his various achievements and roles.

Raymond E. Watkins papers

Raymond E. Watkins was a noted obstetrician and gynecologist. He became professor of obstetrics in 1922 and served as the dean of the department. His collections consists of papers, research data and articles related to his work and that of his colleagues.

John E. Weeks papers

Abstract

John Elmer Weeks (1853-1949) was an eye surgeon, author, and an extensive traveler and lecturer. He helped found the Board of Ophthalmology, discovered the Koch-Weeks bacillus, and was widely acclaimed for his method of reconstructing the orbital socket and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. This collection consists primarily of materials used in the composition of his autobiography, including manuscript drafts, correspondence, and some photographs.

Edward Staunton West collection

Abstract

Edward Staunton West served as chair of the Department of Biochemistry at University of Oregon Medical School for 32 years before retiring. He was instrumental in establishing the Primate Center and served as a consultant for the Army and Navy during World War II. This collection consists of a portrait, photographic slides, an interview on cassette, and an article on West.

John BeVier White papers

Abstract Dr. John BeVier White was born in Shelby, OH, ca. 1898. By 1917, he had enrolled at Stanford University but left school to serve in World War I. After his discharge, he came to Portland to attend Reed College. He received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1927 and completed his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital before entering private practice in 1928.
