Willamette University Medical Department records

Abstract Willamette University began medical lectures in Salem in 1867. Oregon Medical College was incorporated in Portland in 1878; the founders of this institution then convinced Willamette to relocate their medical department to Portland, and unincorporated the Medical College in the same year. Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary Photograph collection

Abstract

The concept of a hospital auxiliary organization has a long history in America. In 1752 the first such was created to help Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Hospital. Since then they have grown, centered on the twin pillars of charitable fundraising and volunteer service. The Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary photograph collection provides an intimate glimpse into the people and actions of one such organization in a local Portland Hospital.

Oregon-born Ivan Medhurst Woolley graduated from the Oregon Medical School (1919) and became a general practitioner for 10 years before transitioning into radiology, which he practiced for another 32 years. The Yamhill County Medical Society (YCMS) was formed as an organization for physicians residing in Yamhill County, Oregon. The YCMS was a sub-society of the Oregon Medical Association (OMA), which was a part of the American Medical Association (AMA). The records of YCMS consist of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, announcements, articles, membership applications, rosters, a diskette, and AMA and congressional booklets.
