Scope and Contents

The collection contains textual materials from the Yamhill County Medical Society (YCMS) which span sixty years (1943 - 2003). The majority of the collection ranges from 1970 to 1999. The materials consist of correspondence from the YCMS Presidents and Secretary-Treasurers to members and outside foundations. Records of meeting attendees, goals, procedures, amendments and legislative documents from the Oregon Medical Association are included with the correspondence. Announcements for YCMS meetings and events, including dinner menus, range from 1973 to 2003. Membership applications from 1989 to 2000 include attached pocket-sized portrait photographs of seven applicants. The meeting minutes within the collection range from 1965 to 1993, while account activity, ledgers and financial inquiries from members span from 1964 to 1990. For legislative guidance, the YCMS collected articles, reports, bylaws and booklets from the Oregon Medical Association and the American Medical Association.

Historical Note

The Yamhill County Medical Society (YCMS) was formed as an organization for physicians on every level who reside in Yamhill County, Oregon. Local physicians could become members by completing an application with two letters of reference and paying an annual fee. The YCMS would hold frequent meetings for the physicians to gather, exchange ideas and practices, and find support. The YCMS was a sub-society of the Oregon Medical Association, which was a part of the American Medical Association.

Within the Yamhill County Medical Society Records collection, there are no obvious indicators for the date of origin or when the society officially dissolved.

Abstract

The Yamhill County Medical Society (YCMS) was formed as an organization for physicians residing in Yamhill County, Oregon. The YCMS was a sub-society of the Oregon Medical Association (OMA), which was a part of the American Medical Association (AMA). The records of YCMS consist of correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, announcements, articles, membership applications, rosters, a diskette, and AMA and congressional booklets.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated on October 22, 2014 by George Barker, M.D. Barker was the last secretary/treasurer of the Yamhill County Medical Society.

Physical Description

The Yamhill County Medical Society Records consist of four 5"x12" metal-edged boxes, three full size and one half size. The documents contained are in good condition, with only minor tears on the edges of a few. The majority of the enclosed meeting minutes, correspondence, reports and applications are 8.5" x 11", while the booklets from Congress and the American Medical Association range from 6"x9" to 8"x 10.5".
