Lucy Davis Phillips collection on women graduates of Oregon medical schools
Scope and Contents
The Study of Women Graduates of the University of Oregon Medical School and Willamette University was in the form of a scrapbook. The materials include photographs, biographical information and obituaries for some individuals but not all. There is an alphabetical index. Subsequent pages list the physicians in chronological order by date of graduation. It was added to the Library collection in 1948 and compiled mostly by Lucy I. Davis Phillips. It also contains newspaper articles and other information added to the volume after Phillips' death, some clippings added as late as 1978, biographical information regarding Ms. Phillips and some publication information. Also an addendum to the collection consists of survey forms filled out by women physicians who graduated from the UOMS, rosters of female UOMS and Willamette University graduates in active practice and minutes of the Multnomah County Medical Society. The results of the survey are conveyed in the scrapbook.

Biographical Note
Lucy I. Davis, born in Aurelius, Michigan on June 11, 1882, was the Registrar of the University of Oregon Medical School for 25 years. She came to Portland with her parents in 1891 and graduated from the Portland High School. Ms. Davis married Shannon Phillips on August 20, 1937.
Lucy Davis began her service at UOMS in 1918 at the 23rd Avenue and Lovejoy Street location before the institution was based on Marquam Hill. She continued her duties until shortly before her death on October 8, 1943.
Ms. Phillips kept the records of all students of the school and evaluated and summarized the transcripts of thousands of applicants for admission, which was considered to greatly facilitate the work of the Committee on Admissions.
It was said that she had a gracious personality, unfailing courtesy, and a deep sense of responsibility and was efficient in her work. These attributes made her an important asset to faculty and students alike. She was active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Portland and served as president of the club in 1938. She was also a member of the Association of Registrars. While registrar, Lucy compiled the record of the activities of women graduates of the school, which comprises this collection

Abstract
Lucy I. Davis began her service at UOMS in 1918 and continued her duties until shortly before her death on October 8, 1943. While registrar, Lucy compiled the record of the activities of women graduates of the school. The materials were added to the Library collection. Materials included in the collection (originally in the form of a scrapbook) are photographs, biographical information, obituaries, newspaper clippings, chronological graduate lists, marital statuses, survey forms, publications, and biographical information about Davis added to the scrapbook posthumously.
Acquisition Information
The materials were transferred to the PNW Archives (now Archival Publications) of the University of Oregon Medical School. Library staff added other materials. The collection was accessioned into HC&A in December of 2004.
