Biographical Note

Guy W. Gorrell, M.D., passed away Monday, Dec. 13, 2010. He was 90. Born Aug. 28, 1920, in Pomeroy, Wash., he graduated from Yakima High School in 1938 and the University of Oregon Medical School in 1953. He interned at Multnomah County Hospital in 1954 and completed a residency in general surgery at University Hospital in 1961. At Emanuel Hospital, Dr. Gorrell served as chairperson of the Surgery Department and on the board of directors. Instrumental in the general surgical residency program at Emanuel, he was a surgical preceptor for many years. OHSU awarded him an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery, Emeritus for contributions to teaching residents. Guy trained as a P-40 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. In later years, he enjoyed flying with Columbia Aviation Country Club, Columbia Seaplane Pilots Association, and Quiet Birdmen. Guy was predeceased by his wife, Mary; and son, David. His surviving children are Laura Baker of Portland, Bonnie Longshore of Lake Oswego, and Daniel Gorrell of Oregon City; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Abstract

The Guy W. Gorrell papers is a variety of materials detailing the work of Dr. Gorrell, M.D., a Washington born doctor who graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School, interned at Multnomah County Hospital and completed a residency at University Hospital and worked as a surgical preceptor for many years. Included are some of Gorrell's certificates, correspondence, work papers and plaques.

Arrangement

Materials have been organized as to four types; Documents, Correspondence, Patient File and Photographic prints, certificates and plaques.
