Historical Note

The OHSU Department of Public Health & Preventive Medicine was established in 1941 by UOMS faculty member Adolph Weinzirl, M.D. Over the 20th century, the department grew a great deal, resulting in the hiring of individuals such as Harold T. Osterud, M.D., M.P.H., who was made Interim and then Permanent Chair of the department in the 1960s after Weinzirl's passing. With a focus on community service, the department was involved in expanding health care to the public through efforts such as establishing community health clinics. In 1992, Katherine J. Riley, Ed.D., became department administrator and an adjunct faculty member. Riley's efforts were central to the formation of OHSU's Master's Degree in Public Health (MPH) program and the Oregon Health Policy Institute in the early 1990s. Following Riley's retirement, she was named Assistant Professor Emerita.

The department now has three divisions: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Health Services Research, engaging in instructional and research activities. Major research specialties within the department include women's health, environmental and occupational health, and substance abuse.
