Abstract

Doernbecher Children's Hosptial is an academic teaching hospital affiliated with Oregon Health & Science University, established in 1926 through a donation by Ada Doernbecher Morse. This collection, which dates from 1925 to 2015, consists of a variety of records evidencing the growth and inner workings of the Hospital and its administration and fundraising over the past century.

These papers contain pictures of nurses and patients at Doernbecher Memorial Children's Hospital, as well as several clippings documenting surgical events on twins (identical and conjoined) events and news at Doernbecher in 1959.

It spans the years 1922-1958, covering a variety of subject matter related to medical practice and education in Oregon, including articles on activities at the University of Oregon Medical School and Multnomah County Hospital. There is no known information about who compiled the scrapbooks.

Grace Phelps (1871-1952) was a prominent Oregonian health professional and nursing advocate who maintained a career as a practicing nurse from approximately 1900 to 1942. This collection houses the professional and public records of Grace Phelps, and includes materials relating to her time as head nurse at Base Hospitals 45 and 46 during WWI; head nurse at the Portland Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital; and Superintendent at Doernbecher Memorial Hospital for Children.
