Ralph E. Peterson papers
Scope and Contents
The Ralph E. Peterson Papers contain records documenting the life of Dr. Peterson, his education, and his career as a doctor, both in the U.S. Army and in private practice. Records in this collection include certificates, course notes, medical texts, an obituary, and orthopedic anatomical models. The focus of this collection is likely the anatomical models, but Peterson’s accomplishments are highlighted in his certificates and learning of his devoted military service.

Biographical Note
Ralph Edward Peterson, M.D., a first-generation American of Swedish decent, knew he wanted to be a doctor from the age of six. After graduating from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1956, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served as a First Lieutenant and, later, as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Clark Air Force Base in Manila, Philippines from 1960 to 1966. From 1968 until the end of his career, Peterson practiced medicine in Naples, FL; he also served in the National Guard from 1977 to 1991. His Army service was recognized by being awarded the Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. In medicine, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, was a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. Letters of commendation received during his service speak to the high quality of medical care Peterson and his team provided at Clark Air Force Base. He had a love for music and dancing, shared by his wife Dorothy; and a deep interest in education. Dr. Peterson died on October28, 2013.
