John E. Weeks papers

Abstract

John Elmer Weeks (1853-1949) was an eye surgeon, author, and an extensive traveler and lecturer. He helped found the Board of Ophthalmology, discovered the Koch-Weeks bacillus, and was widely acclaimed for his method of reconstructing the orbital socket and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. This collection consists primarily of materials used in the composition of his autobiography, including manuscript drafts, correspondence, and some photographs.

Edward Staunton West collection

Edward Staunton West served as chair of the Department of Biochemistry at University of Oregon Medical School for 32 years before retiring. He was instrumental in establishing the Primate Center and served as a consultant for the Army and Navy during World War II. Abstract Dr. John BeVier White was born in Shelby, OH, ca. 1898. By 1917, he had enrolled at Stanford University but left school to serve in World War I. After his discharge, he came to Portland to attend Reed College. He received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1927 and completed his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital before entering private practice in 1928. Ruth Wiens papers

Abstract

Ruth Avery Wiens was an experienced psychiatric mental health nurse who worked at St Vincent Hospital and Medical Center as its Nursing Director; at the Veterans Administration Hospital; and at the UO School of Nursing as Dean Pro-Tem during the transition in SON leadership between Jean Boyle (1957-75) and Carol Lindeman (1976-95). Many of her papers have been donated which show the inter-relationships of nursing and nursing education.

Otis B. Wight Base Hospital 46 glass plate negative collection

Abstract

The collection consists of two sets of glass plate silver bromide negatives. The images were taken by Otis B. Wight, M.D., and are of Base Hospital 46 and staff stationed in Bazoilles-sur-Meuse, France during World War I. During the war, Wight served as Captain as well as the Chief of Medical Service at the base hospital. In addition to military service, Wight practiced as a physician and surgeon in Portland, Oregon for many years.

Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary Photograph collection

Abstract

The concept of a hospital auxiliary organization has a long history in America. In 1752 the first such was created to help Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Hospital. Since then they have grown, centered on the twin pillars of charitable fundraising and volunteer service. The Woodland Park Hospital Auxiliary photograph collection provides an intimate glimpse into the people and actions of one such organization in a local Portland Hospital.
