Content Description

A scrapbook of photographs, newspaper clippings, cards, and correspondence regarding the deployment of the 46th General Hospital, U.S. Army, from 1942 to 1945. Includes pictures of many of the individuals in the unit, many of whom were physicians from the University of Oregon Medical School. Locations include Fort Riley, Kansas; Oran, Algeria; Southern France; and Besancon, France. Also includes October 8, 1943 edition of "46th Hypo" newsletter (volume 1, number 2), and 3 editions of "The Stars and Stripes" military paper (Stars and Stripes Africa: November 6, 1943; and Stars and Stripes Mediterranean: December 25, 1943 and January 1, 1944.

The scrapbook was created by Leon F. Ray, M.D. and annotated to some extent by his wife Barbara Ray. Barbara was in Fort Riley with Leon until the 46th shipped out for Algeria. The scrapbook was donated to HC&A by Leon's son, Thomas L. Ray, M.D. in 2026.
